Here at Lynx Car Hire, not only do we find you the best car rental deals, we can also help you to save money on the fuel that you put in your hire car!
Saving money is a big priority at the moment for many, what with the current economic doom and gloom. Big or small, whatever car you drive, chances are you can make each litre of fuel go that little bit further. Just by making some small changes to your current driving habits, you can increase your MPG (miles per gallon) and cut the amount of money you spend on petrol and diesel bills.
Follow our easy fuel saving tips and not only will you be helping the environment, you will be helping your wallet too! We would love to read your top fuel saving tips – share your advice with us below by leaving a comment.
The faster you drive, the more fuel your car burns – simple. Not only will keeping to or within the speed limit save you from penalty points and fines, it will increase your MPG too.
Be gentle on the accelerator and keep the revs down, without making the engine struggle. Acceleration and braking uses fuel, so read the road ahead to avoid accelerating to speed, then having to slow right down. In slow traffic maintain a steady speed to avoid constant stopping and starting.
Driving in low gears can over-rev the engine and reduce MPG. Drive in the highest gear possible without labouring the engine. Change gear at 2500 RPM (petrol) or 2000 RPM (diesel).
Luggage racks and roof boxes cause higher fuel consumption because of the extra wind resistance they create. If you do not need it, take it off.
One of the biggest causes of poor MPG and increased fuel consumption is tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres have more rolling resistance; this means your car has to use more fuel to keep it moving. Check your tyres at least once a fortnight.
If you find yourself stationary or idle for more than a few minutes, switch your engine off to save gas.
Lighten the Load
It is amazing how much junk we keep in our cars. Regularly clear out your glove box and boot. The less that weight your car has to haul around, the less fuel it burns, and the higher your MPG will be.
Have your car serviced regularly to keep the engine running as sweet as a nut and at maximum efficiency.
Plan journeys and check traffic news before you set off. Getting lost or stuck in a traffic jam wastes time and fuel. Google Maps is a great place to start for driving directions and live traffic data.
Air Con or Air Off
Air conditioning causes the engine to work harder, burning more fuel in the process. If you must use air conditioning, use it on fast roads and motorways, and open the window at low speeds and around town.
Find the Cheapest Fuel
Use petrol and diesel price websites, such as Petrol Prices, to find the cheapest fuel in your area. The difference in price may only be small, but it could cut your fuel spending by as much as 10% each year, and as the saying goes, “every little helps”.
Hire a Smaller Car
The smaller car you hire, the cheaper and more economical it will be. Step two of our Car Hire Quote page details the average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for most of our hire cars. Just click the “Vehicle Details” link for more information.
